Interesting read on the demise of WDFN.
Nice read.
I wonder how much longer 95.5 will be on the air.
It would be interesting to see if somebody from the station goes internet radio. such as the channels on iTunes Radio. I listen to Technicolor Web of Sound at work all the time. Shit's pretty high quality with almost no overhead as compared to a traditional station.
Other than in your car, you'd be able to listen to it all the time (as long as you have an internet connection, so I suppose half of Detroit would be SOL).
Muhme is probably happy he picked up some long-term job security.
Now that 97.1 has the market completely covered, they can do whatever the hell they want and not have to worry about appealing to listeners.
I may have to look into Sirius or XM.
I'm listening to the syndicated WDFN right now, and Dan Patrick's show is pretty dry.
Give me some Colin Cowherd!
It sucks that this happened, but WDFN has been on the decline for the last couple of years. Jamie and Brady was a great show and when they got rid of that it was over. Shep just can't handle the load himself. Stoney and Wojo got way too repetitive in the late stages.
97.1 is okay to listen to in short bursts. Open phone lines all day gets very annoying, though. Most of the people that call in are idiots.
We should go over the the WDFN message boards and steal their posters.

It just isn't right that they were allowed to just sweep aside 15 years of what had become part of the fabric of the area, just like that.
I really hate that this happened. It was good for us to have two sports stations here in the city. Obviously, over the past year since switching to FM, DFN hasnt been a concern for us as we have had to broaden our listener base. Yet, it was still good for us to have a choice.Quote:

Now, on to you guys bashing my station and its format. I will start this by saying that I cannot speak for all the shows. I deal directly with Valenti and Foster... You guys that say you hate open lines need to start listening more and give it a chance, because WE SAY open lines DOESNT MEAN it is open lines. We say open lines to get people calling in, however our screener and hosts weed out what is talked about. 9 times out of 10 we are talking about what the majority of our listening audience is talking about. Granted, it is easy to say we arent a sports station anymore, because sports talk radio rarely exists. We are more of a guy talk station with a heavy sports influence. With our show (again, I do not know how the other shows operate, prep or get their material) we usually like to have 4-6 sports topics and 2-3 fun/guy topics to use throughout the day.
Now, if you guys want to talk Pistons and call in when we're talking Lions/Tigers... You will get in... but what we have totally cut out is the idiot callers. If you cannot communicate, state an opinion, defend your opinion, carry on some form of dialect with the hosts...then you will get cut off and blasted off the air. We are trying to get as many people on that are able to take a stance on something, defend their point and communicate without sounding like their wife is beating them in the background. Also, we do not do the whole question and answer shit... if you have a question about something...forget it... you wont ever get on...
However, if you just dont like the hosts...which of course nobody is going to like every lineup on the radio...then you wont listen... but if it is a format issue... I hope you guys give it another shot... at least our show (Valenti and Foster)
...anyways, I hated seeing DFN go as well... I knew some guys over there and i knew they did a good job. Henson hit a lot of it in his blog spot on, and I am honestly shocked it took this long for this to happen.
I agree. I hope that S&W and a few of the others resurface in the market somewhere, although I doubt it since the salaries that they would likely command most likely aren't going to be palatable at the surviving terrestrial stations.Quote:

Some of that shit used to just crack me the hell up. I listened to their show just as much for the entertainment as I did for the local sports info.
I'll miss the drops, for sure.

I have a strong feeling stoney and wojo will re-surface on WXYT after the 90-day non compete period.
I recall they tried to steal them away from WDFN a couple years ago when they were up for a new contract.
Can WXYT really afford to pay them what they'd want?
I guess time will tell.
Clearchannel is paying them not to work for the next 3 years. I don't think WXYT would have to pony up much.
Cut Valenti. He deserves it after gloating like an asshole over WDFN doing under.
They should get rid of that god-awful morning show on WXYT.
Jay fucking Towers & Bill McAllister are BRUTAL!
75% of the time, they don't even talk sports.
I remember when I was in grade school listening to Jay Towers on 93.1 DRQ on the schoolbus, he was a fag then, and he's a fag now...
If you had Baligian do 6AM-10AM on WXYT...I think the EVERYBODY would be happy.
Guys, do you look at the ratings anymore?
Stoney and Wojo's ratings and fanbase had hit a major wall...especially for what they were getting paid.
I would put a ton of money on the issue that they (together) will not resurface on XYT together.
...also, cut Valenti? Drop the #1 host in the 25-54 male demo in afternoon drive? Not going to happen.
Nobody with half a brain would think twice about cutting valenti loose. He's highly disliked.
His show is #1 because of the fm signal. Nothing more.
WDFN's declining ratings had much more to do with horrendous mismanagement than an the on-air talent.
You're not serious are you? I know that he is not liked by all...but for you to say he is highly disliked is asinine.Quote:

...are you familiar with radio ratings and what Valenti and Foster are doing? You dont just come in and dominate a target demographic like they do just because you have an FM signal.
Again, I get you may dislike him and the show... but they have proven over and over and over again that comments like you just made are false.
Could you link me to this... I know the guy really really well and this is nothing Mike was gloating over.Quote:

But to gloat about that station going under is false. It helps us to have DFN around...to a point
It didn't. WDFN ran themselves into the ground.Quote:

Valenti is pretty universally hated. He gets ratings because of WXYT's FM signal, but only because there's no alternative. It doesn't mean people actually like him.
If WXYT was serious about maximizing their on-air talent, they'd make a pitch for stoney and wojo.
Valenti rolls hard. Most great radio voices in that demo are assholes. You think anyone wants to hang with Stern? Valenti talks shit and backs most of it up, he knows a shitload about college sports, and a good bit of it trickles into the pros. His pro hoops takes are poor, but I can live with that since Foster next to him knows plenty of real tangible info having been around the league for so long.
I didn't even know one thing about 97.1 before I moved over here 6 months ago besides Mumhe went to bowling matches with Wolverines. By the time DFN went off the air I only flipped to them while XYT was on commercial. All their staff was god awful besides Sean, and he was only good in 15 minute pieces. I'd never call into the radio, but I sure as shit never had anything to call into DFN for besides to correct some of those dopes. No loss to me.
The problem people have with valenti is the same problem people have with the rest of 1270: they don't know shit about anything except football.
For all of WDFN's faults, they actually had a well-rounded staff. They had guys who knew hockey, baseball, basketball, etc.
It's insulting for me to tune in to 1270 for anything piston-related. They are beyond terrible. Valenti is the worst in that regard, but he's far from alone.
For those of you that don't listen to WXYT's hoops talk, just look over the next langolis Q&A session. It's more or less the same shit. The comments are that fucking bad.
You're making it obvious you never give our station a shot... Fair enough... and because a host doesnt homer THE LOCAL team... doesnt mean they're wrong.

I agree the football overload is the biggest fault there by far. Why in January are we spending an hour talking about the same #1 draft pick we had last month and will still have in 3 months? (I know Muhme, cause people call in to talk about it).
I hate it... we have put the kabosh on that... at least on our show.Quote:

One way or the other, the guy is absolutely clueless when it comes to anything except football.
If I liked football, and nothing BUT football, then yeah the ticket might appeal to me. But their station is so linear that people that like a different sport first (not exclusively, but first), get turned off by it very quickly.
Muhme, what do you think the chances of Baligian ending up over there at some point? He's really the only one I'm depressed about. I love his show and Valenti & Foster's for different reasons.
Valenti goes to the practices.
J/K Muhme. Glad it didn't happen to 97.1 and that you still have a job. Times are tough to be looking for work.
I have always been a fan of Sean's show. However, I do not think there is a shot of him coming here. He would have to change his broadcast style completely and take 6p shift.Quote:

Cool, when you listen to the show for more than a week... I will come back and actually have some form of discussion with you. Until then, enjoy MeyersQuote:

Yeah, the nice thing about WDFN for a Piston fan is that they had a vested interest in talking about them and having Pistons-related guests on.
Yep. That's the main reason why I listened to stoney and wojo and sean b.Quote:

Things might be different next year... The Pistons cannot be happy with their signal throughout the metro area on DFN...now thisQuote:
